If you are traveling to an area with a college or university, check with the Residence Hall Director for dormitory room rentals - many schools rent dormitory rooms to members of the public during summer break and at other times. These rooms tend to have simple, outgassed furnishings ideal for the chemically sensitive traveler.

The
Chemical Sensitivity Foundation (CSF) is working with Bennie Howard,
Acting Director of the Office of Disability Policy at the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to raise public
awareness about multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). Mr. Howard
allowed CSF to film him presenting an introduction to the 30 minute
HUD version of CSF's 60 minute MCS video. Mr. Howard has
arranged for HUD to place a copy of this video in each of its 87
offices around the USA, thereby helping MCS people obtain reasonable
accommodation from landlords whom they are paying with HUD Section 8
vouchers. Federal laws–specifically the Fair Housing Act,
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with
Disabilities Act–prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability.
HUD considers multiple chemical sensitivity to be a disability under
these laws. Despite this coverage, the Department continues to receive
many telephone calls and correspondences from people with multiple
chemical sensitivity who report that their landlords refuse to
reasonably accommodate their disability. If you, or anyone you know,
believes that they have suffered housing discrimination because of
their disability, please contact the HUD office nearest you. Fair
Housing is not an option. It’s the law.

Subsidized housing in the USA is not usually built with the
chemically sensitive in mind, except for two outstanding green affordable
housing developments:
Ecology House - San Rafael, CA http://www.consultclarity.com/eh/
and Colorado Court - Santa Monica, CA http://www.californiasolarcenter.org/solareclips/2001.12/20011204-8.html
However, in some areas of the USA there are a few older buildings with tile floors, hot water heat,
etc. which the
chemically sensitive in low income situations may tolerate. Find affordable housing by
State at the HUD website, under Affordable Rentals. Subsidized housing at individual
developments often has a MUCH shorter waiting list than section 8 voucher
programs.http://www.hud.gov
